What does my car really cost?

Gas is the part you notice. Add insurance, repairs, the payment and the value the car loses every year, and the real number is often three times the gas bill or more. Your numbers stay on this device.

The Car Maintenance Log and Expense Tracker (printable PDF) has a service schedule, a log for each service and repair, a fuel and MPG log and a yearly cost summary that ends in your cost per mile.

How it is worked out

Gas = miles / MPG x gas price. Value lost per year is a share of what the car is worth now: about 15% for a car up to 3 years old, 12% at 4 to 7, 10% at 8 to 12 and 7% after that. Tires last about 50,000 miles, so a set is spread over those miles. Maintenance and repairs default to about $1,000 a year for a mid-age car; raise it for an older car. The car payment is counted in full here; the interest part is the real cost, the rest pays down the loan. A planning estimate.
