Needs: what you must pay to live and work: rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, car and transport, minimum debt payments. Wants: eating out, shopping, subscriptions, trips, hobbies. Savings: emergency fund, retirement, extra debt payments above the minimum, investing. Use take-home pay (after tax). The rule is a starting point; in a high-rent city 60/20/20 is common and still healthy if savings hold.
