Tips to make it feel real

Roll it up with a red ribbon and leave it by the cookie plate on Christmas Eve, or have it "arrive" in the mailbox in early December. Sprinkle a little glitter or flour "snow" in the envelope. For more than one kid, make a letter for each and mention their sibling by name. Little kids under 6 get shorter, bigger letters automatically.

What to write in a letter from Santa

The wording the maker picks from, if you'd rather write it by hand.

Opening

Ho ho ho! The elves just dropped your file on my desk, and I had to stop everything to write to you. / Mrs. Claus says I should be packing the sleigh, but I wanted to write to you first.

Praise that feels real

Name one or two true things: helping at home, being kind to a brother or sister, trying hard at school, being brave at the doctor. Kids notice when Santa knows the details.

A gentle nudge

One little thing for next year: keep practicing going to bed on time. I know you can do it, and the elves will be cheering for you.

The wish

I saw that you are hoping for a red scooter. The elves are busy in the workshop, and I will do my very best. (This keeps it a surprise without a promise.)

Closing

Remember to be asleep early on Christmas Eve, because I can only come when everyone is sleeping. A cookie for me and a carrot for Rudolph would be lovely!
